Launch of 8-inch foldable iPhone in 2023
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who wrote to investors in a letter, Apple is planning to release a foldable iPhone with an 8-inch QHD+ flexible OLED display in 2023.
The most recent report from our industry sources indicates that Apple’s 8-inch QHD+ flexible OLED display foldable iPhone is anticipated to arrive in 2023, with SDC serving as the exclusive display supplier and Samsung Foundry as the exclusive DDI foundry. We estimate that foldable iPhone shipments will exceed 15-20 million units in 2023, based on Apple’s requested capacity schedule. In the foldable iPhone, TPK’s silver nanowire contact solution is expected to have many advantages over SDC’s Y-Octa technology.

In Kuo’s opinion, foldable devices will become a “must-have” for smartphone manufacturers, boosting “mega-replacements” of high-end models in the process, and Apple will be the “biggest winner” in the foldable mobile phones trend. According to Kuo, Apple will ship 15 to 20 million foldable iPhones in 2023.
A foldable smartphone combines the functions of a smartphone and a tablet. Future foldable devices will allow smartphone, tablet, and laptop manufacturers to blur the lines between these products in the same way. Thanks to its cross-product ecosystems and hardware design advantages, Apple is likely to be the biggest winner in the recent foldable smartphone movement.
It’s not the first time Kuo’s mentioned a foldable iPhone. In March, Kuo stated that Apple may ready to release a 7.5 to 8-inch foldable iPhone by 2023, but this date is conditional upon Apple solving primary technology and mass manufacturing problems. Although Kuo stated that work on the foldable iPhone has not yet kicked off, Apple’s efforts appear to have advanced, as Kuo revealed more information about the technology Apple intends to use.
